Army Net Zero

Net Zero Initiative

The Armys Net Zero (NZ) Initiative is built upon the Armys long-standing energy efficiency and sustainability practices. It is a strategy for managing existing energy, water, and solid waste programs with the goal of exceeding minimum targets, where fiscally responsible, to provide greater energy and water security and increase operating flexibility.

Best Practices and Assessments

Net Zero Energy

  • FY13 Army Net Zero and Energy Program Summary (PDF 292 KB)

The Net Zero Energy roadmap describes the strategy and steps for achieving an installation’s Net Zero Energy goals. Roadmaps allow installations to conduct planning to reach their goals, identify funding sources, and develop projects. This report summarizes the main roadmap components for the Net Zero Energy goal.

Net Zero Waste

  • Fort Carson Mattress Recycling (PDF 344 KB)

Working with a local recycler, Fort Carson no longer sends any of its mattresses to a landfill. All mattresses are taken to the recycler at no cost, and the recycler ensures all materials are recycled, re-used, and or re-purposed.

Net Zero Water

  • Net Zero Water Balance and Roadmap Programmatic Summary (PDF 144.86 KB)

As part of water portion of the net zero initiative, water balance assessments and project road maps were created for each of the eight water pilots. The water balance assessments identified each pilot's current water demand and estimated water use for each major end-use including potable and industrial, landscaping, and agricultural water applications. The project roadmaps used the water balance results to create a strategy for the pilot to meet the reduction goals and site-specific net zero water objectives. Each roadmap contains water conservation measures (WCM) and a life-cycle cost analysis for each WCM to determine the economic effectiveness of each measure, both individually and as part of bundled projects. The Army Net Zero Water Balance and Roadmap Programmatic Summary presents the results of the water balance assessments and roadmaps.
